I was busy on Saturday this weekend and couldn't get out so instead of my 1:30 bike and the 1:00 run on Sunday I did 50 miles on the bike with St Ives CC on the Sunday. The wind was bad enough on the way out to the cafe stop as it always seemed to be a head or a cross wind . The journey home was even worse with very little shelter and it being almost totally flat, the headwind we had was relentless.
10 miles or so from home and two of us tried to get a chaingang moving but nobody else wanted to play and I can't really blame them but it made for hard work at the front. Then I realised I'd been on the front a while as the other had dropped back and I was really feeling it in my legs. We came to a junction and I was hoping someone would takeover but it didn't happen.
Just as I thought I couldn't stay there any longer someone came past and I tucked in behind, it felt great. I couldn't get on the front again so it was left to him for the next few miles and then all of a sudden a junction and we were turning left, most of the wind was behind us :o) It was now, with only about 5 miles to go, those who'd remained on the back decided to move forward.
I was spent and was happy that I only had 2 miles to go till I was home, a very hard ride but a really good one and it made up for any missed training. Looking at the data when I uploaded it we had only averaged 16.5 mph for the 50 miles, normally it would have been at least 19. A 30 minute swim this morning and my legs had recovered, hopefully enough for tomorrow's bike session.
